San Juan County Partnership manages the AmeriCorps program for Tse Daa K’aan Chapter in Hogback, New Mexico and can also be completed at another Chapter area, that is currently unnamed. AmeriCorps is a national community service program that enlists members to provide service to communities. After they complete their service hours, they receive a Segal Education Award, which can be used to go to college, pay college loans or, it can be given to the member’s children or grandchildren to go to college.
The program at Tse Daa K’aan focuses on helping veterans and military families access resources and provides them with minor home improvements where needed. The program has assisted veterans with home weatherization, ramp installation, painting, yard cleaning, wood/coal and non-perishable food assistance, healthcare access and transportation resources. Members attend monthly veterans meetings and training. They host veteran events and recruit new members.
Another focus area is environmental stewardship. This involves removal of invasive species and the re-establishment of native plants. Members also develop trails for exercise and recreational use by community members.
Currently, AmeriCorps has enrollment for (3) half-time and (4) quarter-time positions at Tse Daa K’aan Chapter. Eligibility starts at age 17, with no upper age limit.
San Juan County Partnership is working to establish the program at another Chapter House in addition to the current program. The additional Chapter program will have 9 member positions available.
